I may have been a classmate of yours. I was a freshman in 1963. My room was in the upper floor of Halcyon Hall - a very dark and grim room whose window was enclosed by outside walls on both sides, so the view was like looking down an alley.

My roommate and I had nothing in common. She was popular. I was not. I started in the foreign language, secretarial , study abroad program and quickly learned I couldn't read or write short hand or type fast and had no desire to be a secretary in Spain.

At that time, Bennett was unapologetically a "ring by spring or your money back school" for the very rich but not bright enough for seven sisters ivy league schools.

My first semester Dr. Timothy Leary had just bought the estate next door, and the faculty totally lost it. The whole student body was assembled in the auditorium and was promised instant expulsion of any student found anywhere near the Leary estate.

The faculty should have kept their mouths shut. Most Bennett students didn't know Lysergic acid from stomach acid, and issuing dire warnings about going near the Leary estate was like making a public address announcement to check the place out.

I only lasted about six weeks at Bennett. I wasn't rich or social , and I was looking for a education not a husband.

Waiting for a patient that never came back.

I don't think most ppl who are posting are trying to accuse anyone now days of abuse. I think they are responding to emotion that these wonderful pics Motts has taken. I think that everyone has agreed that abuse has occured and, sadly, will continue to occur most likely due to human nature. It is a cruel world we live in and it is always bettered by the caring ppl that HAVE actually worked in the MH field. That being said, yes, there could possibly be sensational journalism at work, yes there could be influencing of the sort going on, and no, no one said it was the RULE, and not an exception. When ppl read the websites posted here, (the autobiography, the interviews, etc.) it draws a lot of emotion, and I don't think it is meant to attack anyone. it's just hard to grasp, and try to keep from jumping to conclusions. I do not think it is wrong for ppl to form opinions about WHAT WENT ON AT PENNHURST. That is the real argument that everyone has lost sight of. Not whether all the healthcare workers in the MH field are sadistic. Abuse has been documented, yes it is sad, ppl need to do something about it, and a loud standing ovation needs to be given to ppl like Lynne and others who have chosen to help these people.

BTW, I could safely say that I am new at this site, but u can look at the other locales and see I am not ur average "hit and run' poster.

If anyone read the El Peecho interviews at the beginning of these pics, you might have been led to believe this is "the tunnel" they were talking about. Very interesting and foreboding.....

A patient's records would not be given to the family upon the patient's death unless a formal request was made by the family. Medical records (including all of our own, not just those of patients with mental illness) belong to the doctor, therapist, hospital etc. that provides the treatment, not to the patient. While the records are *about* the patient, they are *owned* by the provider.

Although these records have patient names on them, they are not necessarily clinical records. They could contain the monthly bank statements for the trustee accounts the hospital maintained for each patient, with receipts for all the funds spent for or by the patient. Other possibilities--personal property inventories, correspondence from Social Security, etc.

I'm a nurse in the uk. In the older hospital the medicine cupboard consisted of 3 cupboards in 1 with 3 separate keys.
Key 1 opened the big medicine cupboard which contained the usual everyday drugs.
Key 2 opened a cupboard inside this cupboard and held the 1 in 4 drugs or scheduled drugs such as anti depressants, night sedation and strong painkillers.
Key 3 opened the last cupboard which was inside the 1 in 4. This smaller cupboard was called the DDA cupboard (dangerous drugs act) and held the opiates etc.
The 1 in 4 cupboard had "poisons" written in red on the door, and the DDA cupboard, obviously DDA. Scheduled drugs and DDA's are poisons.
Hope this explains things a bit. I don't know what S1 means though.

after watching the activities on most haunted live over the past week i can honestly say what a awesome building, scrolling through the pictures on here i feel like i really can see all the spirits and poltiguists in the rooms, such a shame this building isdue to be demolished would love to see it renevated before the bull dozers takes over

Besides the people who smear feces because of their developmental level, and some others who do it for attention, I've also known people who used smearing feces to keep others *away* from them, as a means of self-defense. ("don't bother him unless you want poop thrown on you") But most of the time it just means the person needs more activities .
