Amazing just how quickly an abandoned building deteriorates.

The lights are fluorescent fixtures. I've not seen versions with so many tubes on them but I seem to recall seeing images from the abandoned Gary, IN post office before it got throughly trashed that were quite similar fashioned lights.

G- how do you find the apparitions in these photos? Residual energy, or is anything really visible?

visually "diluting" it with white like that is the only reason a bright color like that would be tolerable for me. I'd find it revolting/oversaturated if a room was ALL neon green or pepto bismol pink.

The "ghost" face in the bottom right is cracked glass. The red tee shirt is another person. Always look for the rational explanation first. I'm with "PARENT"... these shots should not get you all excited; they should fill you with grief for what was done to the innocent people who lived here. I work with people with mental retardation, and these places make my skin crawl...no ghosts necessary

I dont thinjk this was originally "meant" as a shower at all.. In my old school, built in the 50's the custodians 'closets' had similar enclosures that they filled buckets in and washed things out... Maybe it was converted for other use after.... ??

Motts, Just found your site while researching Pennhurst (which I grew up "investigating" since it was in my backyard). This is also right down the street from my childhood home, obviously. I noticed that you don't have the farm house that is included on this campus. It's quite amazing, there are a few homes and a large barn full of equipment. We stumbled across it one day and it became my local hang out as a teen. There are some great photo ops there. I was a psychiatric nurse in another institution here in Pennsylvania, during the 1980's to the late 90's. I had many other nurse friends that were transferred from Philadelphia State Hospital and came to work with me. The stories many would tell of the poor working conditions were astounding. No one who works in a State run facility sees the best of humanity. In the late 1940's to 195's the only drug heavily used was Thorazine. It was given in massive doses and was the only drug available for Schizophrenics. Many had severe brain damage and were like zombies. They needed almost complete care. The Govenors that held power in this state did not care about the mentally ill, often selling off large parcels of property around them for thier own gain. Our legislators, (elected) cared about thier own pockets and that is why our institutions suffered.
