Wow. Yeah, I totally believe in the "leave only footprints" kind of thing but it would have been so tempting to sack a couple of those .. maybe just flip through one and put it back?

I was thinking about christmas gifts. But few photos ago Motts said "Some rooms of the hospital were piled high with boxes of administrative paperwork". :(

Just an update for everyone. Great Barr Hall is still standing but only just, there is still talk of restoration but nothing seems to be happening fast, The only thing that has been restored is the old bridge over the stream that runs down into the lakes, it now stands there in the middle of all the decay blocked off by big logs at both ends but pristine. Security are still there doing their pathetic job of supposidly protecting the hall.
The halls state deeply angers me, it is about time someone pulled their finger out and got it restored.

Just to update everyone, these building have now been completely demolished thanks to the vandals. Due to so many fires being set within buildings by the vandals and the fire service not being able to access the site with fire engines they felt it was too dangerous to leave them standing therefore they have now been flatened and only the roads they stood next to exist now.
That certainly makes this gallery even more special to me, thanks, your photos are wonderul.

First thing that caught my eye was the beautiful cast iron rail and the perfect hint of decay on it. Stunning!

There are so many reasons why this could have happened...

Imagine, the owner dies with no heirs, close family, or instructions on how to deal with the house. The furnishings are sold to pay debts, but the house costs more to renovate or keep up than it's really worth, so it sits...

Or, the house is left to a surviving son or daughter in another state. They can't move their jobs and families to this big old house, they can't afford a live-in caretaker, they can barely afford the property taxes on the house. It goes up for sale, but dad never put much money into renovations and it needs new wiring and plumbing to get up to code, and probably a new roof. The house sits on the market, no one willing to take on the challenge for such a large house so far from town, needing such expensive repairs.

One late winter evening, a short in the wiring sparks a fire that burns fast and hot, collapsing the roof before the fire department can arrive. Several states away, the family gets the phone call - their inheritance burning - and there's little they can do about it. So the house sits, too expensive to repair, too far away to worry about.
