That is a weak spot with the big hole for the knob leaving a small portion of the wood intact to hold. The metal plate reinforces this wood and the size of it + the number of screws spreads the load evenly . If there were fewer screws the plate might bend between the screws leading to the wood giving out under enough force.

The center left window frames a picture within the picture. The Tudor facade of another building.

Takes a bit of looking for me to realise that the background the window is set in is painted stonework.

These places no matter where they are always leave me with the same forlorn feel. I think it is the economical minimal maintenance landscaping and maybe my experiences unknowingly influencing my POV.

Looks like that built a brick 5th floor to replace the mansard roof.
