That's a sock? Looks to me like a glove with the four fingers missing. Maybe someone had both gloves on and slapped the chair over so hard that the fingers fell off, then they left the gloves but took the finger coverings...

Nice picture. That is the most space behind a Murphy bed I've ever seen. Looks like there's a little door in the wall in that space. I would have looked in there. It might be a way to get somewhere else.
