Slippery

Neat rows of tombstones lined the grassy hills of the cemetery, well maintained amidst a manicured lawn. A curious copse of trees stood at the edge of the property though, thick with wild tangles of vines and overgrowth. A closer look revealed a stone crypt covered green moss, which thrived in the dense shade and damp air. A hole was unceremoniously knocked out of the side of the tomb, probably with a sledgehammer. We crouched in and entered the atrium; the air was thick with the summer humidity and smelled like rotting wood.

A broken skylight let the sunlight in, which created a habitat for more moss and algae that coated most of the interior. A very old knotted rope dangled from the shattered glass, green and frayed - a way inside the tomb from the roof, perhaps created by grave robbers many years ago. Many of the heavy marble slabs that covered the resting places in the walls were strewn on the floor, broken and slick from the plant growth. It seemed like quite a few of the occupants had been disinterred and moved to another burial place, but the ones that weren't so fortunate were still in their caskets or strewn across the floor.
