Charles George VA Building #9 History

Located along Riceville Road in Asheville, Building #9 served as a nurse's dormitory for the Charles George VA Hospital, although it was often mistakenly referred to as "the sanatorium." The building was vacated in the 1970s and left open to the elements, and suffered damage from fire and vandalism. It was briefly used as a haunted house for a fundraiser in 1990.

Despite the length of neglect, the concrete building materials held up rather well over those decades, and provided an option to renovate the structure instead of demolishing it. $9.2 million will be put into rehabilitating the structure into a mental health center called Liberty Center. The building is part of the Oteen Veterans Administration Hospital National Historic District.
