The bars were to prevent prisoners from pushing guards over, a common occurrence.

My old Art school had those kinds of doors in the basement- It used to be a burlesque house and there were theatres down there... they're thick wood, and soundproof, and designed so you can't slam them.

I believe this was brought in or restored by the Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site Inc., under a glass case - it wasn't just laying around.

Great shot! I just visited ESP and this chair is just in one of the cells. This was not the barbershop, but the chair looks cool there.
