I grew up in West Islip but never knew about this one!! Been to the KPPC a few times. Friends have been arrested there. I also lived close to the half-open,half-closed Pilgrim State. Love your site.

What happened, Christine? Did the fire burn down the entire place or just badly damage it? Or was it contained to a certain part of the hospital?

Sheltered workshops consisted of piecework in clean well lit areas off the ward a place a minimally functional patient could make a few dollars stuffing envelopes or gum machine bubbles. As for the board, yes probably written by staff who didnt spell too well, but they were there to take care of some very sick people, maybe even a relative or two

I have only explored the Corcoran Building and the Sunburst Building, and have not seen anything that resembled an operating room in either. I believe these areas were used as dormitories, day rooms, and various treatments.

So much of the mile-long "String of Pearls" was demolished; I'm betting there were standard medical facilities any large state hospital would have (surgery, laboratory, morgue, etc) that were also torn down. Or, perhaps these medical buildings have been renovated and integrated into the NYIT campus.
