It is a steam engine driving a direct connedted generator, they powered the hoslpital elevators and the exhaust steam from the engine heated the hospital. I think they originally had 4 steam generators then in later years had 2 diesel generators as back ups for the steam plant.

The hospital towards the end ran direct current generators for the power for the elevators, the exhaust steam from the engines went into the heating system of the hospital so I guess you could say they either ran the elvators for free or heated the hospital for free.
