We have several buildings in a town nearby where I live that look just like this. It makes me wonder. I don't think they were for coal, but I'm sure they were for some kind of manufacturing.

It's amazing how much I don't know about the coal industry, and I live in a coal area. We have a mine tour locally (Motts...you should come to Scranton just to go on it!!) but I haven't been on that for years. It gets old after the 5th time lol. :)
