Love it when someone can explain this stuff. Thank you!
Exactly Binky! I thought the same thing!
Hard to believe they did all of this without modern technology. Amazing what they accomplished...and it worked!

Does anyone know what the slag cars are made of? What material is able to hold molten steel?

Could I have a clue as to how deep and how wide these were? Lookin pretty huge! Poor deer :(
I think the sheer size of this place is intimidating. Some photos look like the superstructure on ships. Some look, as someone said, like prehistoric creatures.

The video is relly cool, I wonder what it's like to see that in person. The slag cars remind me of tilt kettles, which are huge bowls used to make very large quantites of soups and stocks in the food industry. There is a layer of steam, or a steam jacket, between the walls of the bowl. The heat from the steam is what cooks the food. They are on hinges like the slag cars, because they are so large. They're impossible to lift to poor the liquid out.

They don't make them like that anymore... today everything is so utilitarian, used be a craft to it. Make it nice to look at and the craftman took pride in it.
Thanks Ian for the great information!
