It looks like there was something in the center at one point. But it broke off. Maybe it was a vase or potted plant or marble torch.
The architecture is simply amazing, unfortunately in our age they put more emphasis on getting a building up quickly instead of beautiffuly.

On the left wall, it looks like there was a book case painted on the wall?
