Hey, great stuff here! i live in Wilkes-Barre/Kingston and I was never in the Sterling! They actually never demolished the entire building.. maybe half? A lot of people have used the fire escape to get in I hear? Thanks for the posts!
Looks like a decaying and descending or ascending set of stairs on a lop-sided wedding cake.
Wasn't this demolished?

When I went to Wilkes University, I lived in an apartment on the 6th floor on the corner shown in this photo. It was close to school and certainly inexpensive. However, the smell of urine, trash, and mold made it difficult to breath at times. The penthouse suite would have been beautiful in its time. I was able to venture down in the basement and also the annex building, but never for too long or alone. The lobby must have been beautiful, even in its deteriorated state it was impressive!
Nice photos. Thanks for letting me relive some of my life.

I am going to college right around the sterling, and the back building is torn down, partially at least, but I have heard that demolition became too expensive, and was stopped. Most of the building still stands. The outside looks almost exactly the same as the pictures. Most buildings in the town of Wilkes-Barre are abandoned.

Amazing pictures.... It tears my heart out that such a spectacular place has been left to rot... I dream that one day it'll be made grand again.

I was in here this weekend. It's still abandoned, although it's gutted inside. The columns and wrought iron railings are still there.

This place looks amazingly similar to the Blackhawk hotel in Davenport, IA. I was able to go inside after it was abandoned and get a few shots, nothing near the quality of these galleries though. great work!

i agree with trevor i think it is horrible that they can just let a place get that bad to the point where people r living in the place i think when the economy isnt in such a shit hole i say they should restore it and re open it

WOW ! I In the fall of 1983 through much of 1984, a friend & i LIVED at the Sterling. one bed w/ a "taco effect" mattress......WHEEEEE! Got a new double mattress. Still have pictures of the room, view out the window. Knew some nice folks there.Aad often wonder where they are. !n the early *80s the feel was one of low rent housing . The was a small club downstairs near the lobby & a cafe where I often had WONDERFUL breakfasts.I have had dreams I was back there. I can tell a lot of people hold great affection for the Sterling & yes ,we all loved that lobby. It was a'draw' then ..People came in just to show it to visitors from out of area..Must check the forum out . Just might find some references to that period. SO GLAD YOU FOUND AN ENTRY WAY!!!!!!!!i i CAN ENJOY THE Sterling here in Portland, OR
