actually I think what you are looking at is the pattern in the adhesive used to mount the tile to the wall in places where the tile has fallen off. The pattern is from a notched trowel used regulate the depth of the adhesive.

This looks like the remains of one of those small gas furnaces that would normally hang from the ceiling. Possibly electric, but that's what it reminds me of, if should have a fan somewhere to blow heat across the heat pipes, but it looks well abused. Cool item though, I love random machinery!
