942 Comments for Severalls Hospital

Thi8s picture reminds me of a sinking ship (which scares the shit out of me by the way)
Looking at it makes me dizzy!! lol
Love the colors, great picture, especially like the Bycycle Barrell Monster!
I want to walk down this hallway and listen to the echo of my footsteps....

Bueno el encuadre y el pasillo, y la luz que se ve a lo lejos, se captura todo lo lugubre del lugar.
sorry if the doors arent as spotless as you would like sir.
madge and jean buckly, 2 twin sisters from colchester were responsible for this part of the hospital.
I will speak to them about it over the weekend.
However as they are now in their early 80s DONT bank on it getting re cleaned.

This picture came out so mystical. Like some wizards tower on the astral plane or something. Did Saruman live here?

I love this website. Don't comment often, but I visit very frequently. I would love to visit these places... though every time I have attempted exploration myself, I hear a loud noise or something and end up running away. thank you Motts for preserving them on film, as it seems they won't be around much longer. It takes a creative mind to appreciate what most would simply like to forget. They are spaces wherein the sacred and the profane walk hand in hand.
Thank you Motts for this wonderful gallery! And I also think this picture would be perfect as a wallpaper.
" X marks the spot "
Strange how one door is very dirty while the others look clean.

these pictures have brought back a lot of very
sad and upsetting times for me
I sincerely hope each and every one of you who look and appreciate these amazing pictures and beautiful architecture NEVER EVER forget what this asylum was REALLY about.
A hospital for very unwell and in some cases very disturbed people,
The LUCKY ones like me live to tell the tale. The others are sadly no longer with us.
Dont forget this was my home for 4 plus years, for many many oeople this was their home for 10 20 30 and even 40 years!.
i have to say a big thank you to mr motts for ending this chapter and 4 years of my life with the most amazing and poignant picture.
i have spent the last hour or so in tears remebering what REALLY went on behind these closed doors
THANK YOU motts. YOU ARE A LEGEND!

MISS HAWKE is quite correct. The hallways were VERY intimidating, whether on our own or with a group of fellow patients and staff being escorted somewhere .

this corridor looks like the one i actually ran down when i was trying to escape.
previous comment about having a sock race is quite peverse as we werent allowed shoes and socks whenever we left the ward so IF we did manage to escape we could be identified by staff immediately.

They didnt allow the locks on the inside to avoid us self harming.
We were bathed in groups of 10 --males and females together. Mr Bradley is correct, we would ALL have to bathe in the SAME water, mainly to save MONEY , but also to save time..
We were escorted by 4 or 5 regular nurses and 2 or 3 student nurses. We were taken to and from the bath area naked, so as to save time, and keep the levels of power in their control at all times.
i recall these seclusion rooms VERY WELL .
I spent several years here when i was 17/18 .
let me tell you it was WORSE than it looks!
