i lived in belchertown when i was growing up and i went to after-kindergarten club in a building on the grounds of BSS. as someone else noted it's perfectly legal and not discouraged to walk around the grounds: few of the buildings are even fenced in, though they're all boarded up. when i was a kid i remember we used to go for walks around the grounds. i think it had been closed for no more than five years then. i remember going up to one of the buildings and looking in the window and it was as if everything was frozen: all the posters were still hanging up, drawings, people's names, and there was a wheelchair just sitting in the middle of the floor, as if someone had gotten up and left. i'll never forget that!
i went back today with my friend and we walked around totally undisturbed for about a half hour. people walk their dogs and stroll around there all the time. almost all the buildings are still standing and the ones closest to the road - the theater one, the one with the clock tower, and a few others - are in great condition; the ones nearer the back are really vandalized but still really pretty, especially in the springtime.
i don't believe the town of belchertown has the money or motivation at this juncture to tear down BSS. but we'll see.
MY MOTHER LIVED A LIVING NIGHTMARE IN THIS GODFORSAKEN PLACE FROM AGE 9 TO 21 SE WAS PUT HERE FOR RUNNING AWAY WHEN HER PARENTS CAME TO GET HER THEY REFUSED TO LET HER GO HOME WITH HER MOM AND DAD HER PARENTS WERE HEARTBROKEN SO WERE HER 2 BROTHERS AND TWO SISTERS. HURT BEYOND WORDS.SHE TOLD ME ABOUT THIS HELL HOLE YEARS LATER BEFORE HER DEMISE IN NOVEMBER THE DAY AFTER THANKSIVING THE DAY OF THE GREAT AMERICAN SMOKE OUT. SHE WITNESSED PEOPLE HAVING SEIZURES AT AGE NINE SCARED SHITLESS NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO THAT'S WHY WHEN I HAD A GRAND MAL SEIZURE SHE KNEW WHAT TO DO WHEN I HAD ONE. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO CLEAN UP AFTER THE GERIATRIC PATIENTS AFTER THEY URINATED AND DEFECATED ALL OVER THE MOLDY DELAPATED FLOORS AT AGE NINE AND FORCED TO PICK TOMATOES IN THE HOT SUN ALL DAY WOULD YOU LIKE DOING THAT?. ASK YOURSELVES THAT QUESTION WOULD YOU?. ANSWER ME ONE QUESTION IS THERE A MASS GRAVE THERE? FROM WHAT I HEARD ON THE NEWS THEY FOUND A VERY LARGE MASS GRAVE WITH ADOLESCENT GIRLS BONES IN IT. I ALMOST AS WELL AS MY OWN MOTHER ALMOST ENDED UP IN THAT GRAVE BECAUSE SHE DISOBEYED THE STAFF THERE SHE WAS PUT IN SECLUSION FOR NOTHING BROKE WINDOWS WITH THE BEDPAN AND SANG ALL NIGHT LONG. SHE TOLD ME THAT THE WOMEN WOULD TRY TO CLIMB IN BED WITH HER AT AGE 9. I WOULD BE SCARED TOO. THEY TAUGHT THEM NOTHING THERE NO READING, WRITING, ARETHMATITIC NOT ONE DAMN THING EDUCATION WISE . DID THEY HOLD SATANIC RITUALS THERE TOO? WAS MY MOTHER A SACRFICE BECAUSE SHE WAS A VIRGIN? IS THAT HOW SHE GOT PREGNANT WITH ME AND MY SISTER AND OUR HALF BROTHER HAD A DIFFERENT FATHER? 5 YEAR OLD PSYCHIC

I went to the BSS grounds today just to walk around and explore a little..... did not realize how many buildings were actually here! A lot of feelings ran through me, but I was not creeped out in the least.. I found myself wondering what really went on here, and why. I wanted to chance going in some of the buildings, but decided that it was probably not a good idea..... so I observed from the outside instead.. I plan on making a couple more trips to the grounds, as I feel ther is still much more to see!

I remember going into one of the buildings a long time ago with my sister, as we both love exploring abandoned structures... no longer standing I presume?
holy crap i saw ppl in the picture
I worked there for many years and all of the stories are CRAP..............These clients were well taken care of and if they even had the sniffles, nursing and even a doctor were on grounds.....The old morgue is in the old hospital building, look for a building that has 1 green door on the back of it, that would be the rear entrance to the morgue.....all it is is 2 old refrridgeration slabs.......The carousel was sold in parts, is NOT in Holyoke.......There was NEVER any 4 story buildings........K building closed in the early 70's.....The old farm house was burned down by arson in the mid nineties by , punk kids.....Paint Shop building was recently hit by arson....The "Theater" building was the school building , which the roof is caving in and most pics are from
This is intriging and scary.. at the same time
