Oh, no, the doors like that were to stop BITERS, gougers etc. It was a place with extremely ill people. I was an "inmate" there at age 17. I thought it would be easier to go to a mental hospital than prison, well rather a reformatory in Cheshire CT in those years. I was VERY wrong. Some of the people there were there 30-40 yrs. at THAT time!!

my mom was in this hospital. i visited her there several times. there wasn't anything cool or fun or goth or awesome about it
Honestly did not know about this hospital until a recent show on the History Channel. After that I just felt compelled to learn more. This site, info and photos are amazing. I read that in 2011, the state began demolition of at least part of the hospital, tunnels etc. Curious as to just how much of the property they plan to demo. Read about ideas of planned Entertainment Parks etc... I just have a real problem with that my self... Anyways, great job I realty enjoyed my visit to your site....

I'm a psychotherapy trainee. After finishing all my therapy sessions, I just had to go back to this photo once again. It feels even close now.
These pictures are stunning! It's a shame how most of NSH has been removed. I follow your site all the time and am simply amazed how you can capture the rawness of these old asylums! Don't stop
So much if this campus was constructed then used as something else then changed agian then ababandoned due to building a new structure. I cant say for sure due to the lay out being slightly askew from the norm of that   time period. The use of monitors on the left wall, and the small "stage", it strikes me as a surgical theatre. Considering the crazy uses of rooms and how often they were changed It most likely was multi function. .
Very cool picture
It is what what they call a surgical theatre. Where yes, surgical procedures or demonstrations would ve held for medical "education" purposes

I'm just very curious. Have you happened to ever come across some old patient files?
