I don't think people make these comments intending them to sound as cold as they do. I think after working in the field we tend to take these comments to heart because we have compassion for the people who had to live here when they were at the darkest periods of their lives. We empathize with the people who lived here and it sounds like people think it's funny they had to live in situations that today only an animal would live in. I know people don't mean to sound so harsh, but I know where you are coming from at the same time - it touches a raw nerve in me as well. :-(
