I don't know about Norwich, but the CT prison in Enfield was doing all their own baking as recently as the70's. (No, I wasn't a "guest" there - just a visiting JayCee.)

Reminds me of many of our downtown buildings built during the same time period. They are covered in marble all over on the insides. Marble must have been "in vogue" at that time. It is a lost art, that is for sure.

Max, yes, it does..... it seems to be an odd size or out of proportion or something... I dont think I'd want to be viewing that locked door from the inside.
How sad that must have been for the patient. No matter which side of the bed you got up on..... the room would still be awful.
