there is a research bldg-
but for torture I know many nurses and docs- that now work in other facilities and the only thing they will tell you that the patients seemed even then to have a lot of room to move- and if you lived in Norwich and road the city bus , you will remember a lot of them ( one in mind) that just use to ride the bus all day after they "escaped" that was why norwich city and that area was fun when I was young- the intresting people you meet!!!!!
i know I have said it before like a old maid- but be careful- the salmon bldg is in bad shape- if you look on the side you will see the brick is collapsed- please take a friend- and truely I would be more afraid of getting lost in the tunnels not of the boogies_ i do have to admit the kettle bldg gives me the creeps
they ( the st) are supposed to remove the fire place before destroying the bldgs- this is real marble- the doors on the admin bldg and windows were very expensive also- they did use it-----
yep the nsh has a way to jump at you- the marble is real (people have chipped ALOT of it) the place including the massisve fireplace are real- the attention they put in to this place- i wonder they said they were going to remove the fireplace- I haven't been there lately but does anyone know?
the nsh was a complete campus- seriously it was just like wierd little town inside a town. They had everything on the campus including care for children- female and male nurse bldgs. multiple dining areas - I can't believe all the bldgs that are on one campus-
hey motts- did you get to see the cribs and old style baby carriages???
vandals come and go- i worked there and lived there when I was young- i love it there it is peaceful( with exception of kettle bldg) during the time we used to comment that the vandals would not tear up the chapel but sure enough I chased kids away and found stupid stuff written on the walls- I was upset- that was the only place that hadn't been terrorized by vandals--
I loved to look at the floor - it's marble and real beautiful design- there was glass everwhere the last time but unbelievable- the pic is beautiful- the criminal insane bldg next to it is really unsafe- please if you visit bring a friend and be careful the ceiling in the middle and stairs are falling- remember back then they used "real' materials...

who actually has been into the hospital? anyone planning any future trips...im up for it! seriously.
You know most people think that Wal-mart is the big fish or strip mall people want to tear asylums down- but it's the condo dev. that want it- look at danvers-just think the reason why the state hosp.are there is because people believed it would be theraputic- looking over water , large green acres of unbelievable landscaping> it wasn't until I had a little more education that I realized the push to demolish these areas. C R A Z Y isn't it?
Motts, if you go back there -I may have a really good area that you might want to visit...
My mother was in the NSH when it was open-often...it really was a beautiful place!! I know it looks really bad but it was the safest place for her...and the kettle bldg is a scary place in one wing they placed the "cutters" and as one old nurse that I eneded up working with said they never left without being soaked...

I just found this site, kudos to you Mr. Motts, and I have now got a new pasttime. I have seen some beautiful pictures and had some awesome feelings from them and I am only on the second set.
I just have to comment on the train in this picture. I used to work with developmentally disabled-back when they were called mentally retarded-and before asylums were closed they were home to many of these people. Years ago the powers that be, thought it was appropriate for dd people to play with toys since their mental age was usually that of a child. Now most companies that work for the dd population realize that they are actually being abusive to adults by giving them toys to play with. This is not to say that some toys are not educational for them, but just to hand them toys to occupy their time is unacceptable now.

Yes, most of the buildings on campus were heated with steam from the nearby power plant.
Although most people believe this was the worst place and how people were treated very bad, I visited my mother there often-and when it shut down and threw everyone out-Take a stroll downtown Norwich -look in the alleys-look toward the dumpsters-under the bridge-you wiil find patients of the NSH, alone and suffering more than you can imagine.
