This is coming from someone that used to be a guard at the old abandoned property. You did an awsome job with the photos and capturing the essence of the place.

my grandmother worked here for a long time and she told me of locking people in these cages when they acted up and attacked the staff so this is what she was most likely referring to

The motto on the fireplace is Latin and is the state motto: "Qui Transtulit Sustinate" translated "He who transplants still sustains."

Man these hall shots with the gates open really get to me. I love every pictures but these really like, idk freak me out. I'm usualy fearless going into abandoned buildings, but I don't think I could go in this hall. Day or night. Looking at this picture makes me think someones just going to jump out of the room or something. Creepy shit.

Reminds me of the Dixmont State Hospital safe :(
It's sad to think that people were tossed into these places sometimes simply because they were in wheelchairs with no other thing wrong with them.

Seeing the pillow makes the reality of its previous owner hit home. Your photo captured that "personal" aspect which makes those circumstances undeniable.

The waste of such beautiful building materials. Thanks for forever preserving them in photos!
If anyone REALLY wants to know what the hospital was like please see my documentary "Brewster's Neck: Memories of Norwich State Hospital". It is 57 minutes long and is not for sale, but is available in every public library in Southeast CT. Any questions, feel free to e-mail me at brewstersneck@aol.com.

I live in a town just next to Norwich and I know a few people who actually worked there and two who were in fact 'residents' there. My great aunt was placed there by my very cruel grandfather when she came over from Poland in the 30s (maybe earlier) because she couldn't speak English and he passed her off as a sociopath...his own sister! The stories I've heard about the 'residents' at this hospital were just as troubling as the extreme mistreatment of them. Friends go in there every year on Halloween to explore the tunnels and cell areas for a few thrills...who knows, with all the tortured souls that endured years there maybe a few are still lingering...but....who knows for sure?!
