Just speculating but this may have been a surplus purchase after war. Or they were given to Studebaker by the military to meet GOV Regs. during the war.
they appear to be salvaged military 2 1/2 ton truck engines, these trucks are still in service, built by studebaker, hupmobile, white, and contenental to mil. spec.
Robert.......yes.....my mistake......Packard aquired Studebaker, the other way around. However the Studebaker nameplate was carried on and Packard dropped. This was at a time when neither company knew much about managing capital and all that was the car business. Labor Unions played a roll in the demise of Studebaker as well. By this time, the Studebaker family was long gone from their company.
figusmakem.....again.......another mistake, my apologies, they are mechanical presses.
jim..........READ THE POST ABOVE YOURS. They went to Venezuela !!!!!!
I had a few mistakes in my post. Due to the OBVIOUS inability for people TO READ thoroughly, I guess I was so fed up with the BLATANT disregard for posts containing correct identifcations of these engines, etc. I finally snapped and went off the deep end with my initial post. It's just amazing that some people REFUSE to read and then STILL offer up their ridiculous assumptions.
I guess that's why some people only buy books and magazines to "look at the pictues" !!!!!!!!!
The conveyor system in the picture is one of the reasons that the physical plant in South Bend was not efficent for 1960's automobile production. The car bodies were assembled in a mulity storey building. Then rode the conveyor to the upper floor of the final assembly building.Where they dropped through the ceiling to the assembly line on the ground floor. As longer and wider cars became popular in the late 50's and 60's the clearences of the conveyor system would not accomadate larger bodies. Some of the longer cars they produced had to be sectioned in a seperate opperation.
The trench is for railroad cars.It was a door level loading dock.It was used in the days before multi-level auto rack rail cars,to load set-up automobiles into Box cars.
They are LD-465 Series Multi-Fuel Engines for use in the M35 series 2 1/2 Ton 6X6 Truck....They were mainly run on Diesel Fuel, but they could be run on other fuels including Gas....
