Amazing stuff. I worked for a few months at a power station once and the noise once you got down to these deep sections of the station was absolutely deafening, even wearing ear-protectors and all. It must be quite something to be there when the place is absolutely silent like this.

The large dial at top center appears to be the "synchroscope" which is necessary to "synchronize" the generator uoyput to the main system. If you throw the switch at the wrong time, you could blow up the generator. Not a good thing to do!

These appear to be "MG" (motor generator) sets that supply "exciter current" to the brushes in the main generators. They are found in all power plants.

The "Tubes" are actually condenser tubes. As the steam goes through the turbine, it runs down through the tubes with contain cool water, thereby cooling the steam back to water.
