I don't know, this is ONE case where i say loot is better than shoot. These ships won't last long, and whatever is on board when they go will be taken with it. I would grab that sonar, and hold it, and know it's history, because once it collapses, no one will be taking pictures of it anymore, and no one will see it. it will be forgotten. Keep these boats alive in some way, you know? Besides, if you're crazy enough to board one, you deserve it.

It's Nordberg diesel Guys.

I would know those rocker boxes anywhere, they belong to a 13 1/2 x 16 Nordberg 8 cylinder diesel engine. Horsepower in the 1800 to 2400 HP range @ 450 RPM. The engine was most likely built in the 50's to early 60's.

Photos labeled STANDING TALL and SIDE DECK are Navy sub chasers.

It is the former USS ATR 89, a Navy rescue tug, later was named HILA before becoming a resident of Witte's maritime retirement home. Sub chasers wer much longer and narrower. Also nowhere near as high in the bow.

A sort of update, Yard is very active, the two transfer tugs apparently have just collapsed away, the boilers and I guess machinery are still there but only visible at low tide. I passed there the other day and both of their boilers were visible, the HEWITT I cant see at all so it may have been removed. You should have seen this place in the 70s when I use to spend two days a week there, talk about history!
Does anyone know if the graveyard is still there? There are rumors that the site has been substantially cleaned up.

Amazing pictures. I was fascinated by these wrecks (seen them from the Outer Bridge Crossing many times) and went to see if I could get near them. Got off the expressway in the area and stopped to check the map. Not 10 seconds after sitting there, a car boxes me in, it's NYPD auto theft task force. Took me out of my car for absolutely no reason, just because I stopped there. Quite unexpected. They questioned me for a while until I convinced them I was really there just to take pictures of the ships. Never even got to the wrecks, can't get down to the water without trespassing. Pretty disappointing... but not sure I really wanted to leave my car out of sight there anyway. Very sketchy area. Be careful.

Hey Motts !
Amazing powerful pix ! Really inspiring... I was wondering if you could help me out with some info. I am doing a study of the North Shore and I would like to know in which areas of the waterfront are those boat graveyards mostly present.
Thanx !
