Sleep safely? I understand that even when it was inhabited it was haunted!

No wonder no one's allowed on the island - they'd catch a terminal case of poison ivy! (That's what's growing thru the window here!)
Since pollepel means "ladle," some people think this was where Dutch ships would drop off drunk sailors; then, when the ship returns, they pick up their sobered-up friends. ;)

i love the castle i with they could repair it and have it lit up at night that would be awsome if that could ever happen i would wanna apply to be a security guard on the island and be proud we have our very own castle in our back yard.

Rebar is still used today. We use it in the block and foundation for the houses we build. I actually am the one who figures out how much to use and what length. This place would be a great place for wedding pictures.

Thanks Nauseous for that post. I wonder if there's still unexploded ordinance strewn about the grounds? That stuff stays dangerous for a long time; European bomb squads are kept busy with bombs from both world wars.

"ln Holland the word pollepel means ladle"

Is the island ladle-shaped? Lots of Dutch names there in old New Amsterdam.

The whole presentation sort of reminds me of the many German Burgen (Fortresses, or Castles) I visited back in the early 1970s. When I came back stateside in 1975, I was stationed in Upstate NY and didn't know there was such a place nearby!

Something sort of freakish about this view. Otherworldly. Somehow doesn't look like anyplace that really exists.
