It could have been scrapped / salvaged, or the institution might have left the fireplace in place just for decoration.

Why the hell is a tree caged but this fireplace not? I mean not every kid can climb up a tree but every child gets fascinating by fire and wants to play with it.

Go to any normal hospital and you will find a cot with bars like this. It's normal. <

This. These cots are extremely common and are standard issue. My 2.5 year old has been in them many times when hospitalized for asthma issues

People's perspectives are interesting, aren't they? I look at this picture and think "How nice. The children had toys to play with and someone that cared enough to do art projects with them." not "OMG, how could a parent lock their children up in such a place." If a child had a mental disorder, wouldn't it be more cruel and neglectful to NOT get them the help they need from professionals with the education and experience to help them versus a parent w/o the knowledge allowing them to deteriorate further?

Quoted from Garth:{ that's just a fact--even to this day--about antiquated plumbing. i live in an old Victorian and my wife won't flush any of her sanitaries down the toilet for fear of clogging up the system. and the same thing with similar houses in the surrounding area--no feminine products whatsoever, else it means dire shit for the sewage system.... }

Its a fact of plumbing in general. I've always been taught NEVER to flush those things down any toilet, home or otherwise.

It's likely that the fence was put there to stop the children wearing the ground down around the roots, which may have damaged it.

what a terrible thing for little children to once have been in a place and situation such as this. children were supposed to be out playing in fields and playgrounds, not locked away in decrepid hospital wards. it makes you shudder doesnt it?
