A lot of severely autistic people tend to compulsively bang their heads on walls or hit themselves in the head/face when they get overstimulated or distressed. That's where the popular conception of the "special kid with the helmet" comes from, if you've ever seen one on an outing somewhere.

They tend to use soft foam masks and helmets now similar to what you'd use for sparring in karate. Less chance of injuring their hands.
