I had polio in 1952. Paralyzed from the neck down. My diaphragm was paralyzed so my lungs collapsed. I was in an iron lung for 2 1/2 months. Many people who were in them, were "weaned" off of them so the diaphragm muscle could strengthen itself. I'm 64 and my breathing is sometimes shallow in very humid air, but by God's grace, I'm still kickin' with no breathing apparatus needed!
It amazes me how clean some of this equipment looks after so many years.
They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Many people still use negative pressure ventilation - particularly patients with neuromuscular disorders. My fiance uses one from portalung.com to sleep. They're not so bad when you are only inside them over night. Not nearly as steampunk or as scary as the models in the picture.

The intense shadows made this for me. Also I've always been one to take for eerie labratories.

I find it enchanting. The slight angle, and the decay along with the debris makes it for me. I find the monotone intensifies it. How I like me some good Hallway shots ahahaha XDDD

These kinds of tables are made for people with serious urinary issues; i.e. people who cant pee. The procedures are a bit scary if your unfamiliar with them. The feet go up in the stirrups and a tube in placed in the urethra and liquid is forced into the body so that the muscles are forced to "let go". It can be very painful,

Thank you Lisa for keneipg us all informed about what’s going on with Artie. I have always told him that you are his angel and you prove me right time and time again. Many blessings to both of you and please give him a kiss for me! Thanks. Sharon

How long would the rods burn? It depended on the amperage used for the lamphouse, type of carbons used, etc. but you could setup for a 6,000 foot reel with an hour's running time. All of the installations here are for 2,000 foot reels so you would change over every 20 minutes. I handled carbon arc projection, and you would try to leave about 5% burning time available at the beginning so you could give the rods a chance to "burn in" before opening the douser-otherwise you might have flicker on the screen.
Has anyone ever seen the movie "Crybaby" with Johnny Depp? One of the main characters' mother is in an iron lung and she smokes like a chimney.

I don't know that much about catholic iconography and I didn't really find out who built the hospital, but given it's in a state known for massive immigration of catholics from overseas around the time it's been built, I somehow had to think of holy mary as heaven queen, being saluted and given presents by children... the blue overcoat would be a typical holy-mary-color and well, the second color would typically be white, but I've seen red quite often as well. Would be nice to hear from someone who knows more about that stuff. :-)
