you probably know this now, but it looks like an iron lung. I'm not sure what they're used for but if they do what their name says, they replace your lungs for breathing. and stuff.. :|
Re: Old medical equipment, someone has mentioned elsewhere that removing some of this stuff will cost more than any resale value.
Almost all British mental hospitals had on-site laundries, urbex has a few good pictures of old equipment like this.
If the hall was used for different things then I guess the seats were stacked against the walls, & have been removed.
