That part of the followspot is known as the boomerang. It drops colored gels in the light path to color the light. They're used regularly, white light isn't pretty so gels are used to make the harsh light more appealing. Spots like these use gas filled HID lamps that deteriorate quickly when turned on and off and are left on for the whole performance, so the "black" color is used to snuff the light along with the iris. It's really a metal disk with heat reflective black paint on it.

Why would a theater need a disco ball? Did boogie fever sweep the audience?

The records were just too much for the poor little guy...and not only are some of them trashed, but I swear it looks like some have melted together.

@Mica I want to assume that it is tiling, but time really has not been kind to them.

Makes me wonder when exactly you would need such colored lights shining upon you...then again I know nothing of stage/theater so I assume a red/yellow/green/blue light must be effective sometime.

Looks like it must have been a very impressive window...wonder why they painted it on the wall instead of on the bricked up portion?

Looking at the destruction in this picture makes it hard to believe it was only abandoned 11 years prior to this picture being taken. Michigan weather must be a b***h.

Great shot.. but that center squiggly drives my OCD crazy. Who in their right mind would design something like that?? all turned and off center.. even the two outer squigglies aren't symmetrical .. /sigh.. lol
