Jeez its such a shame that this park has become what it has. Even more so now that vandals have begun trashing it like its their own personal playground. I feel that if Katrina hadnt been as bad as it was,or that the levees held out, this place might still be open today....but its not,and its far from saveable too ):
What a picture event - am really impressed, especially with that "brush-on-a wire" -thing - some awesomely clever constructions skills right there, making them hang on through storm and flood and all..
Fun fact about this coaster: They filmed part of the latest Percy Jackson film here and actually sent a train out on the track to run for a shot in the picture
You can just imagine it, being on that ride & seeing the others in motion, hearing the laughing, screaming & chattering of the park, as it was being enjoyed.
I posted a link to that, in the forum section of this site, Freespirit. It was the eeriest thing I have seen, an abandoned & powerless wheel, spinning & making the creepiest screeching sound I have ever heard.
In the show, Life After People, on the History Channel, they stated that sometimes, coasters like this had sand packed into the hollow steel tubes that the tracks were mounted on. If sea water breached the connection points, salt water sat in the insides & began to corrode the metal from the inside out.
The sand was there, inside to act as a shock absorber for the ride, to cut down on vibration as the cart ran the track. If indeed the joints were breached, the sand is most likely still damp with the water from Katrina & the coaster can no longer be safe to used again.
Motts, this has gotten worse, as time, weather & people have done far more damage than Katrina ever did to it. From the pictures I've seen, not much is left standing now, except a few letters from the Gotham City Hall sign.
