Through the doorway is a curving staircase to the basement.

There are metal rungs attached to the smokestack wall on the right; possibly vestiges of an outdoor ladder if this spiral staircase was built after the stack.

Wow. What more can I add to the comments already made? I love this view! I have always been a forest kind of gal (DH and I used to go camping out in parks and campgrounds a LOT before our first child was born and then when I was pregnant with #3 we took the family camping in Canada, tents and all!) so this is a very serene and calming comforting picture. Just watch that first step...it's a DOOZY. :)
