There's usually a dank, musty, rotting wood odor inside the old buildings; newer facilities can be pretty odorless, or rank with a nasty mold / mildew smell depending on the humidity and ventilation inside. Attics are almost always a dusty-stuffy smell, and laced with a pigeon dropping stink depending on the temperature.

Hospitals often still have the scent of strong disinfectant I like to call a "hospital smell;" it's quite unpleasant but I think I've grown attached to it, for obvious reasons.
