Those "gashes" are where the concrete spalled due to the rusting of the rebar within. Once in contact with moisture, they rust and expand, popping the concrete off. But of course 'gashes" is a more imaginative viewing of it!

I've come back to this gallery a couple of times, and each time I initially think the title to this shot is "Radical Gate."
