A message board would be lit up for night reading instead of lighting the whole room or hallway it was in to the brightness necessary for reading. In the time before cell leashes people used to track their own activities and were responsible for finding out on their own and to remember it, when they had to show up for this or that as well as to find out about activities outside of work or other opportunities. In the convent this would probably be where the Mother Superior posted notices and changes in policy or schedule that the nuns or students needed to be aware of.
