This is absolutely stunning work...so glad I stumbled on to this site when researching Hart Island, although it's many years since these were uploaded.
What an amazing place, I haven't the words to describe how it makes me feel...
Thank you
Oh wow...the metal 'suicide' grills to stop people jumping down, amazing.

"Hart Island’s Last Stand

After years of study, the city has declared an emergency to bulldoze most of the buildings on the city’s potter’s field, without following the usual environmental review process."

I wonder if the crematorium was never built in light of what happened with them during WWII.

All those building methods that kept so well are probably really bad for the environment.

Still impressive, though.

Beautiful.
I'm surprised people aren't squatting there.

Lol, a butcher's shop on the island of the dead.
I guess that makes sense?

I can still hear the sound of these generators running. My dad was a stationary engineer for to DOC and I used to go with him to work a lot. I know every inch of this plant and spent my childhood exploring this island from I guess 1965'ish to mid 1970's

Wow, what beautiful photos. Thank you sharing them.
Beautiful, but very sad Harts Island.
Just learned about Hart Island from son, and it is now on the news with the Covid-19. I never knew the island existed. It is a very sad story.
Thank you for documenting this for readers.

Those look like women's wedges, not wooden forms. They have finished straps and soles, and don't appear to be made of wood.

I have been enjoying the pictures, beautiful write-ups, research and comments on this site for years... but like others have mentioned- these are artistically beautiful shots here.
Art, with a story, to remember the many who will be forgotten.
