The fireplace looks dramatically smaller just because the mantel was removed (most likely by salvage thieves). The huge stone support beam in the firebox would have been covered by a heavily carved mantel. I agree with the above comments that most likely a giant mirror was used on the over mantel to reflect large amount of light into this beautiful room. I can see how beautiful it was in my head!

It's broken but it can also be restored. Ive done work like this and that railing could be restored. It is amazing the type of restoration products are out there today...
