First time poster, long time follower! Love this site. I am thinking this is an early autoclave with the top missing?
Reminds me of artificial watermelon.

The Kirkbride building (these photos), power plant, and nearby service buildings were razed. One of the infirmary buildings that was attached to the Kirkbride (circa 1890) had been saved, as it was in continued use throughout the years. This area is now an empty field surrounded by the anti-climb fence.

The remaining structures are still in use by the hospital; mostly neoclassical buildings built in the 1930s.

Is this place still standing? Or is it just the fence now?

I'm excited to see pictures of the "old" Taunton State Hospital. Just to update/clarify what you wrote, Motts: the hospital is still open at 45 beds, and expects to remain so secondary to the heroic efforts on the part of many Mass citizens. The hospital may actually expand bed capacity in 2015 due, in part, to the negative scrutiny Bridgewater State Hospital has been getting. Other extant buildings are leased to the Department of Youth Services, HighPoint, and Cohannet Academy, so the 135 acre campus is still a very busy place. The fence that surrounded the site of the old hospital is still up, and somewhat of an eyesore. Thanks for putting up another wonderful gallery of your work.
