When a new hospital is built and an old facility is abandoned, it's more cost effective to leave the used, bulky equipment in place. The new facility will come with new equipment. It's like moving a used furnace or central AC system from an old home to a brand new one. It's cheaper and more reliable to go with something new. Plus, x-ray equipment is usually custom installed for the room it's in. They don't move to another facility well.

It's more than a little infuriating to realize that expensive equipment going to rot like this is one of the reasons why healthcare is so rediculously overpriced. Docs: IF IT WORKS OR CAN BE MADE TO WORK, SALVAGE IT AND MAKE SURE IT'S USED. KEEP HEALTHCARE COSTS DOWN!!!

Usually these are "holding" points before the body goes to the funeral home or a location which they do autopsies. Most hospitals do not do autopsies, the Medical Examiner does. This is why the cooler only holds three or four bodies at a time.
