I waw awfully glad to find this website, along with the photos.
Back in January, 1973, I was in nursing school, and our class took a field trip out to Western State School and Hospital. Therefore, I've been trying to find out something about it.
I was surprised to hear that it was demolished.
Do appreciate the photos.
The device in the foreground is an intact AreoFlush bedpan washer-sterilizer. The focus of the picture is indeed a Kholer diaper sink, listed on their website as a morgue sink. Bedpans and soiled diapers were scrapped out into the sink, the diapers were the sent to the laundry and the bedpans were cleaned in the AeroFlush. It used hot water to clean the bedpan and steam to sterilize the unit.

Just think of sitting in that chair with no novicane because some highly intelegent people thought that mentally chalenged people don't feel pain as we do. Having your teeth pulled out that way. Sucks don't it.

Jezzibug, settle the hell down. Your a little too nervous for my liking. yes police and fire dept. do use abandoned buildings to practice in. I they are practicing in such a place then they have had building inspectors as well engineers go through the building and check it out to make sure it is safe for such activity. what is so wrong with repurposing these old building for this use. it's cheaper than building new just to destroy it. sorry about my spelling, i didn't spell check this time.

They took down the main building. The first day they started , the sky got grey and dark then rained. They stopped working that day.
Now my questiom is... WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CEMETERY THAT IS ON THE GROUNDS? Did they build over it?

Yes it's a real shame those hotels and other historic structures are being leveled in Germany. I have visited a few times, and most of the abandoned complexes in East Germany were last used as Russian military bases... they were usually vacated after the wall fell. I've tried my hand at a few former U.S. bases over there, but no luck so far, perhaps I will be more lucky in the future.

I am a previous military soldier in Germany. I have been watching our old bases being destroyed. Majority of these bases have been functioning before WW1. I hope you can go to Germany and take photos of the old bases before they are all destroyed.
I just found out the Berchesgaden hotels the US used after WWII has been destroyed. There was a lot of historical significance to the buildings during WWII and throught current times.
The structures and the signias on the buildings was fascinating. There is also items scratched out on the buildings due to the WWII removal of all Hitler related items.
There were never any autopsies done on grounds. I really wish u had spoken with some of us employees before u jumped to your own twisted conclusions of Western I was a nurse there for 25 yrs. - much of this info is incorrect as far as the pic. notes. So sad that the truth was not told.
i'm just going to post this on the first picture, but the main administrative building is scheduled to be demolished this upcoming spring (2012). This is the only building i've been so facinated in and find it a real shame to rip down. It was orginially never to be sold commercially and was meant for the public...too bad people ignored that :(

I seriously doubt those are more than 6' deep which makes me wonder, how does someone my size fit into that. Im 6'4" and around 250. Also makes me wonder how the larger ones fit. With the trays, id say theres only a good foot of space left
