I was thinking the same about the clocks when I visited, but if you go back two photos you'll see a circular remnant above the entrance, which I believe was a large clock. Another one might have also been on the opposite side.

The three at the very end were elevator banks, and there were three more on the left side (only one is visible in the photograph).

Yes peering over the edge of the open elevator shaft from the topmost floor possible is always a bit unnerving!
