I worked at the place a long time ago. I was psychology student hoping to gain some insight into human beings by viewing the most wretched people. Anyway, one of our patients in the ward I worked in climbed that very water tower, pulled his pants down and masturbated while yelling "I want the whole world to see!"
I can't say I gained any psychological insight from this, but it's a pretty funny story.

That gate is a locked door into the "seclusion rooms" that were used to hold the patients in solitary confinement.
The patients were held there against there will for a few hours.
I don't think anyone had his head banged against the wall. Duh, that would leave bruises. They had a court set up in A building with a judge exacting the U.S. law.

The second time I worked at that shithole (1977 - 1979), I realized that the problem was the government, and that I, working for the State of Michigan WAS the government.
That sucked.

I was there 1979-80. bought cigs at the B-store, they had a huge ass roller skating rink, Golf course, all the amenities of a first class mental hospital.

I started a new job in Ann Arbor in 1996 and stopped on the way home to get some gas (located directly across the street from the hospital). I didn't know this hospital existed and when I turned around to pump the gas, this is the exact view I had. Spooky! And the forensic hospital sign was still there. I made sure to never get gas after dark there.

There is something disheartening about taking a bath right next to another tub where someone may be bathing also. Maybe it's me, but I do like a little privacy.

Wow I was a patient on B-4-2 it was a admissions ward. This was in 1978 1979. It was very strange experience. Kind of like becoming a number instead of a person. There was no air conditioning very hot. Especially in the seclusion rooms. Called quiet rooms. I was placed in one naked and was on one on one. Someone watched me 24/7 no matter where or what you did they watched. Some were nice some were mean. Some enjoyed abusing patients especially if you had to go off ward. The basement was there favored spots as no one else was around. And plenty of empty rooms. There keys seamed like they would open any door. Some patients would also abuse each other as staff turned there heads rather than see. Not all but some.
