This is one of the most horrific pictures I've seen. It just looks dreary and haunting.

i believe that art can be illegal, most of motts' photography is technically illegal because he's not supposed to be in these buildings. the graffiti in this photo isn't art because it's not creative, it's just like a dog or cat marking it's territory. a real graffiti writer would do something that suits the area. for example: http://www.opacity.us/image4361_vaulted.htm see my comment)

awesome pictures. One must tell me if there is anything left of the places since they've started tearing it down?

the "face" in the dust almost looks like it has angel wings around it, like it was one patient's guardian angel that never left the place. at least that's what i'm seeing (i'm no expert on paranormal things; i just spent most of my childhood living in a creepy old house.)

imagine how happy one patient must have been to feel that warm ray of sunshine in such a cold-feeling place.

another wonderful photograph by motts!

you're a really brave soul if you ventured into this place without a ventilation mask of some sort.

i love how the light shines through this window in this pic.

hi. this is my first comment here. first of all, i love all the colours and the composition of this shot. all of the pictures i've seen on this site are just beautiful.
secondly, any "cold chills running down the spine" that anyone feels in a place like this are probably just their own fears, stemming from the stigma and urban legends of this sort of place. it's funny and cool how emotions sometimes manifest themselves into physical feelings. there could be ghosts or spirits here, but i don't think they would actually interfere with living humans coming into the place, or even be aware of live people there.
"I guess no one told Michaelangelo or Rivera not to write on the walls either."

Graffiti isn't art! Get real!
What is WITH people and graffiti?

It's so ugly and the people who leave it all over everything are vandals. They show how ignorant they really are.
Where would the old records be kept, I wonder?

They tried, but the cost of abatement (13-16 million) stopped that from happening.
