These asylums were, for the most part, designed with the public, not the patients, in mind. It was a desperate attempt at using the architecture to mitigate the poor living conditions.

I give you the proverbial "pat on the back". This was a very thought provoking gallery. It is wonderful to see someone talented enough to shoot pictures that capture more then what meets the normal eye. Not only do you "see a cake" but you also "see the pattern in the frosting" too!

I agree with Mathue. Less coal was required to get the same heat as a bunch of wood, so less space was needed to burn it.
