As a student archaeologist I can tell partially answer Guitorman's question - many of those bodies which have not rotted away entirely, or been otherwise destroyed, are still there - deep within the ground, unlikely to be found, buried under buildings and in river beds. Many skeletons are broken up and destroyed by natural forces including micro and macro organisms. A small percentage of the soil in populated areas is probably made from human bone. It's a sobering thought that below and around us, in the ground, the plants and the animals, are the components of our ancestors. We breathe the same molecules of oxygen and nitrogen that they did. It's a funny old world, when you think about it.

My mom did a story about this when she wrote for a local newspaper... she actually visited once with us to see what we were getting ourselves into, she deemed it relatively safe at the time. Now, in 2008, I don't know... The Feds took over the place in the early 90's and there were some wild dogs running around, and apparently the Secret Service were using them as target practice. It so happens that a dog bit someone and came up with rabies, so they had to dig up the dead dog that the Secret Service shot... thru the story it became known that one of the neighbors had a little Cocker Spaniel that was shot by the Service as well and the owner was quite upset to say the least! The Secret Service tried to cover it up but eventually couldnt keep it underwraps after my mom interviewed the dogs owner. I don't know what the outcome was, but I will ask her.
