Actually, if you do see the inside, its not dreary in the least (well, aside from the fact that its rotting now). Quite bright, in fact.

My mom was a patient here in the 70's and life inside a living hell.

Your right the secrets of what happened there are horrible. My mother was a patient there for 2 years in the early 70's. In the late 80's we got her records from there for her new Dr. and he said its amazing she is as normal as she is. She had enough shock therapy to fry 3 people the Dr said.

Actually they tortured the patient with Electric Shock. I know, my mother was a patient there in the early 70's for a few years.

Well I don't know about that. I think it's probably about the same. Maybe less reported because there is less monitoring.
