These were lit with an LED, they have a nice soft effect but if the space is large, I find the C or D battery maglite really cuts through distances.

I find the best tips for painting are:
1) Don't stand behind the camera and paint, move off to an angle from the subject.
2) Move the light around while the shutter is open for a diffused glow, unless you want a real stark photo with deep shadows.
