I used to work in a hospital that did day programs with adult s with down syndrome and I agree with the above comment that they are the most friendly and loveably people. They're not unhappy people by any means and most of them were in a group home setting and needed that "institutional setting" to function at their best. Taking them out of their group homes would have been the worst thing for them.

In the Midwest where education for special needs children is to age 26, factories, hospitals,fast food restaurants,school cafeterias,retail stores,car washes,movie theaters, etc teach and hire these individuals. And yes,they are very aware of their surroundings

the state operated places like this had more money to burn in the unique construction of many of the places seen here.Ihate to see these places in the shape they are in ,now newer construction seems cheap looking compared to older structures of similar design

Believe it or not The Corinthian Yacht Club located in Essington Pa., just outside of Phiily has several of these still in use. Walking into the mens restroom on the second floor is like stepping into a time warp,with most of the bathroom about as old as these urinals.I think these date back to the early 1900s.

In the only state in the country where special needs children are educated until 26, many great things are now happening for their future.
