They used to paint/stain around a carpet or runner to save money. In some houses, they even used to put cheaper wood in the hardwood floor where the rug went.

Certainly there were times when violently psychotic patients really needed to be restrained though I saw nurses acting out and creating false incidents so they could assert their power over the powerless patients who "asked too many questions." And don't forget most of the patients put in restraints also recieved chemical restraint injections of Haldol, Prolixen, Thorazine etc. Fun times!!! Not!
